Semiconductors and devices: Nano-structured Wide band gap semiconductors, Chemical Sensors, Self powered, Energy Generation and Quantum Devices, Conductance Spectroscopy

Dr. Sayan Dey received his PhD from the department of Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering, IIT Kharagpur in 2020. After the completion of his PhD, he started working as a postdoctoral fellow at IIT Bombay till October 2021. Thereafter, he received the Fulbright-Nehru postdoctoral fellowship and joined as a visiting scientist at Columbia University, USA in November 2021.

His research areas include semiconductor device fabrication, chemical sensors, electrical spectroscopy, nanostructured materials and sensor interfacing electronics (both hardware and software). Presently, he has about thirty one published research articles in reputed, high impact, peer reviewed international journals and conferences (including IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, ACS Applied Electronic Materials, RSC Advances, Nature Microsystems and Nanoengineering, etc. to name a few)He co-owns an Indian patent for his work on highly selective chemoresistive toluene vapor sensor. Presently, his research articles hold 361 citations with an h-index of 11.

He has been awarded the national award for best thesis (Innovative Student Projects Award) twice, in 2015 and 2020, by the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), respectively, for his M.Tech and Ph.D. dissertations. He is currently a member of the INAE since December 2020. He is the reviewer of several reputed, peer-reviewed scientific journals (IEEE Transactions of Electron Devices, IEEE sensors, RSC Advances, etc.) and has co-authored two text books on electronic device fabrication and materials processing.

He has more than seven years of experience in nanostructure growth, solution based synthesis, sensor device fabrication, and handling clean room facilities. He is specially trained in handling X-ray diffraction, Field Emisison Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM)optical spectroscopes, thin film deposition and optical lithography units and building microdevice characterization setups (with special focus to sensor device characterization).

He is the head of the Sensors and Spectroscopy Research Group and is the professor-in-charge for the Microfabrication and Characterization (MF&C) Lab and the Integrated Devices and Electronic Applications (IDEA) Lab at IIT Bhubaneswar since 2022.

  1. Ms. Sukanya Mahalik – Sukanya Mahalik is currently pursuing her Ph.D. as an Institute fellow in Sensor Devices for Non-Invasive COPD Monitoring as part of the Sensors and Spectroscopy Research Group. She completed her Master’s in VLSI Design from VIT Vellore in 2022. She joined the group on 20th July, 2023 and has been actively working on Two dimensional MoS2 based sensors for ultrafast, portable and point of care detection of respiratory allergens and non-invasive and minimally invasive skin patch monitors for screening and diagnosing CRDs. She specializes in MoS2 growth, three terminal sensor device fabrication and skin patch integration. Her thesis, titled “2D- MoS 2 based patch sensors for human respiratory monitoring”, reflects an in-depth knowledge in sensor device design and their implementation in the field of minimally invasive and non-invasive diagnostics. She expects to complete her Ph.D. by January 2027.
  2. Ms. Sampurna Mukherjee – Sampurna Mukherjee is currently pursuing her Ph.D. as a Visvesvaraya fellow in Sensor Devices for Minimally Invasive Glucose Monitoring as part of the Sensors and Spectroscopy Research Group. She completed her M.Tech. in Nano Science and Technology from Jadavpur University in 2023, achieving a CGPA of 8.56. She joined the group on 9th July, 2024, and has been actively working on two-dimensional MoS₂-based sensors for non-invasive, ultrafast, portable, and real-time glucose monitoring devices. She specializes in MoS₂ growth, three-terminal sensor device fabrication, and enzyme-functionalized sensor integration. Her thesis, titled “2D Nanostructure-Based Sensors for Minimally Invasive Glucose Monitoring,” reflects an in-depth knowledge of sensor device design and their implementation in the field of wearable and minimally invasive medical diagnostics. She expects to complete her Ph.D. by January 2028.

Mr. Arijit Pattra – Arijit Pattra is currently pursuing his Master’s in Integrated Circuits and VLSI Systems and working on his master’s dissertation as a part of the Sensors and Spectroscopy Research Group. He completed his B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal, in 2021, achieving a CGPA of 9.31. He joined the group on 10th January 2024 and has been actively working on heavy metal ion sensors, focusing on graphene-based ultra-sensitive heavy metal ion detection for water quality monitoring. He specializes in the synthesis and integration of graphene for sensor applications. His thesis, titled “Graphene-Based Heavy Metal Ion Sensors for Water Quality Monitoring” reflects an in-depth knowledge of sensor technology and its application in environmental monitoring. He expects to complete his Master’s by June 2025.
  2. Mr. Anuvindh R. – Anuvindh is currently pursuing his Master’s in Integrated Circuits and VLSI Systems and working on his master’s dissertation as a part of the Sensors and Spectroscopy Research Group. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication Engineering from MVJ College of Engineering, Visvesvaraya Technological University, in 2023, achieving a CGPA of 9.69. He joined the group in January 2024 and has been actively working on sensor technology, focusing on general-purpose electrical spectroscopic sensors. He specializes in the development and optimization of conductance-based spectroscopic techniques. His thesis, titled “Conductance Spectroscopy: A Novel Technique for Chemical Analysis” reflects an in-depth knowledge of sensor design and its application in advanced spectroscopic analysis. He will complete his Master’s on May 2025.
  3. Mr. Piyush Ashok Chankapure – Piyush Ashok Chankapure is currently pursuing his Master’s in IC and VLSI Systems and working on his master’s dissertation as a part of the Sensors and Spectroscopy Research Group. He completed his B.E. in Electrical Engineering from Government College of Engineering, Chandrapur, in 2022, achieving a grade of 9.55. He joined the group in March 2024 and has been actively working on energy storage devices, focusing on supercapacitors. He specializes in rare-earth-doped perovskite material synthesis and device fabrication for high-performance energy storage applications. His thesis, titled “Rare Earth Doped Perovskite for High-Performance Supercapacitors” reflects an in-depth knowledge of energy storage devices and their applications in advanced systems. She joined the group on 1st September 2023 and has been actively working on MOX (Metal Oxide) sensors for health and defense applications. She specializes in wide-bandgap semiconductor device design and integration for sensing and power applications. Her thesis, titled “Wide-Bandgap Semiconductor Devices for Sensing and Power Applications” reflects her dedication to advancing knowledge in the fields of sensor technology and power semiconductor devices. She will complete her Bachelor’s by May 2025.
  2. Mr. B Hima Kisore – B. Hima Kishore is currently pursuing his Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering is working on his B.Tech project as part of the Sensors and Spectroscopy Research Group. He joined the group on 1st July 2024 and has been actively working on microsensors for breath acetone monitoring. His research focuses on developing a sensitive and selective microsensor to detect acetone levels in human breath for non-invasive diabetes monitoring. The device aims to provide real-time feedback on acetone concentration, facilitating better diabetes management. He will complete his Bachelor’s by May 2025.
